Requiem

At rehearsal the other day the choir director decided we would be singing Mozart's Requiem, the whole darn lot, 90 or minutes or so, from memory. So we went from 'hey this is pretty cool singing this' to 'GAAA'.

Trying to learn it now. Here's a bit of it from the movie Amadeus, unfortunately mythical but still good in parts.

Confutatis maledictis,
flammis acribus addictis,
voca me cum benedictus.
Oro supplex et acclinis,
cor contritum quasi cinis,
gere curam mei finis.

When the accused are confounded,
and doomed to flames of woe,
call me among the blessed.

Ooh, that's one of the best parts of the requiem! I love how the men get the whole angry confutatis maledictis up and down, up and down, and then the women come in like angels' voices over the top, and it seems to calm them down by the end of the whole thing.

Article XXIV

Of speaking in the Congregation in such a tongue as the people understandeth

It is a thing plainly repugnant to the Word of God, and the custom of the Primitive Church, to have publick Prayer in the Church, or to minister the Sacraments in a tongue not understanded of the people.

Tsk Tsk

From memory, that's one of my favourite scenes in the movie because it shows his wonderful creative genius.
